Senate border deal

A number of Republicans aligned with the MAGA movement expressed strong opposition on Saturday towards a newly proposed border security bill that had garnered support from certain Senate GOP members.

The issue of security at the southern border with Mexico has been a prominent talking point for the GOP, with claims of surges in migrant crossings being labeled as a “crisis” or an “invasion.” This stands in contrast to their Democratic counterparts, who advocate for streamlined processes for asylum-seeking migrants.

Republicans critical of President Joe Biden’s approach to the border situation have consistently pushed for stricter laws as a key component of new government funding deals.

On Saturday, purported details of an emerging Senate border security deal were leaked by the Immigration Accountability Project, a political advocacy group dedicated to stricter border security policies, commonly favored by conservatives.

According to an infographic from Fox News aired on Friday night during The Ingraham Angle, which was shared by Republicans on Saturday on social media platforms, the alleged deal would involve setting a cap of 5,000 migrant crossings per day into the United States.

It would also grant work permits to the adult children of H-1B visa holders and automatically issue work permits to undocumented migrants upon their release from custody.

The current negotiations for the deal are spearheaded by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York and Republican Senator James Lankford from Oklahoma. Senator Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, has additionally expressed backing for the ongoing discussions.

As the official text of the deal has not been released yet, the reported provisions remain unconfirmed by Newsweek. Attempts were made to reach out to lawmakers involved in the negotiations for comments, but responses are pending.

Even though the reported details are unofficial at this stage, several GOP lawmakers aligned with the MAGA movement have taken to various social media platforms to voice their opposition to the deal.

“NOOOOOOOO!!!!! This is NOT a border deal! This is a border SURRENDER!!” Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia posted to X. “Any elected U.S. politician that supports this doesn’t represent Americans, they represent the rest of the world! Don’t bring it to the floor, put it through a paper shredder!”

“The Senate Amnesty Bill is a nightmare,” Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida wrote in his own post. “It gives legal status to illegal aliens who have gamed our system and broken our laws. It rolls out the red carpet for 5,000 illegals EVERY DAY, forever. It’s hard enough to stop the far-left’s state-sponsored invasion of our Southern Border, and it’s even harder when you’re pulling Senator Langford’s daggers out of your back. I oppose the Senate Amnesty Deal and will work to see its defeat.”

“Senate Republicans are working with Chuck Schumer on a secret ‘deal’ for AMNESTY & work permits for illegal immigrants,” Representative Mary Miller of Illinois wrote. “I will vote NO on the Senate Republican amnesty surrender deal. Secure the border, deport, and IMPEACH! Put America first!”
